Anxiety and depression are two different medical conditions. Though, many a times their symptoms, causes and treatments may overlap. Any individual can suffer from both anxiety and depression, this condition is termed as “comorbid”

In depression, every time person feels very dull and muted. One feels very low and everything may feel very slow like our thoughts and reaction to surroundings. Whereas in anxiety, things may feel heightened. Most the time person feels on the edge. Our thoughts becomes speedy and reactions to everything may be very extreme.
Stress, low self-esteem and sometimes long physical unhealthy conditions also plays important part for anxiety and depression. Person’s genes can also result in developing any of the conditions. Some researchers also blame chemical imbalances in our brain for both.
Some facts gives the hint that low level serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine can also cause depression. While, imbalance of serotonin and norepinephrine causes’ anxiety. People suffering from anxiety are seen hyperactive in emotions and behaviour.

Anxiety and depression share several symptoms. Problem like nervousness, irritability, noise sensitivity occur with both these conditions. In both conditions, affected person also feels problem with concentration, sleep and eating.
Let’s try an example to understand this: Depression can cause such a low mood and energy that person gets scared of going out of the house even for a minute. They feel anxious and panicked if had to go out. Sometimes they feel that they won’t be able to return or can get indulged in any awkward conversation. This leads to isolation. This creates confusion in other’s mind to understand that it’s because of anxiety or depression.
Sufferer of anxiety are seen doing overthinking of what’s about to happen and what could happen in future. Person has continuous worried thoughts or beliefs that something will definitely go wrong. In other hand, depressed person has a feeling of sadness about future. Individual starts developing a lack of belief of any positivity in his future life. Many a times, depressed person develops suicidal tendencies.
Anxious person is seen shaking, sweating and feeling the need to run away. Also, fast heartbeat, bowel issues and some energy causing symptoms are seen with anxiety. Whereas, in depression, extreme lack of energy, lack of emotions, slow thinking and behaviours, appetite change etc. are seen in depression.
Treatments of Anxiety and Depression
The treatments of anxiety and depression depends on symptoms and circumstances. Treatment many a times depends even on location too. But yes, medications and psychological therapies are common for both the cases. In psychological therapy, patients are required to talk through their thoughts and feeling with a qualified therapist. Also, the treatment depends on individual’s specific situation. The doctor may also ask the patient to change their lifestyle if he as a specialist feels that to be the contributing factor to anxiety and depression.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a commonly used treatment for anxiety and depression. Mindfulness too are seen giving positive result in their treatment. Medicines like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are mainly prescribed for both these conditions. Few other medicines like pregabalin or benzodiazapines are used only for treating anxiety while antidepressants are only prescribed for treating depression.
After-effects of medicines of Anxiety and Depression
Several antidepressants can have after-effects like feeling agitated, shaky or anxious. This can be similar to the symptoms of anxiety. Pregabalin includes after-effects like weight gain, headaches and drowsiness. Its symptoms can be similar to the symptoms of depression.
Anxiety and depression can be solved by talking to family members about how we are feeling. Also, it can be discussed with the people having similar issues. Both anxiety and depression are serious conditions and it can get even worst if the sufferers are ignored. There is no need to go through all such inner disturbances alone. We need counselling about whatever we are facing.
